|The 40-foot wide by 80 foot-long Forty Foot Pedestrian Bridge spans a highway and creates a safe pedestrian link over five lanes of traffic. |
Concrete was selected as the preferred material to achieve economy, longevity and a seamless aesthetic between project engineering, bridge design and site elements. The bridge design combines multiple techniques to take advantage of the variety of unique properties achievable with conventional precast, custom precast and custom cast-in-place members.
A white Portland cement mix was specified for cast-in-place structures and architectural elements to show off the colors of exposed aggregates and to provide the most pure concrete base for translucent color staining.
The jury for the 2008 PCA Concrete Bridge Awards said the bridge “is in itself a work of art. The visual harmony and scale of the bridge succeeds in creating an inviting civic place and a landmark for both motorists and pedestrians.”
